The village of Yzerfontein, steeped in the frontier history of the Cape, is one of the pristine and picturesque towns that dot this wild yet beautiful stretch of coastline. From the long ridge on which the village of Yzerfontein is perched Table Mountain is clearly visible 85km away to the south.

As the name suggests, a fountain was discovered there and the prefix ‘Yzer’ is believed to have come from the rust-coloured, iron flavoured water that it produced, although, it is also said that the name may have been derived from a large slab of ironstone found near the fountain.

Whatever the origins of the name, Mr Abraham Katz, a prominent dairy farmer who started farming in the Malmesbury district in 1900, and was considered to be the first dairy farmer to deliver milk from his farms to the distributors in Cape Town, bought a large portion of the farm “Yzerfontein” in 1936. Abraham Katz recognised the area for its favourable winter grazing conditions and also as a coastal retreat for his family.

The Katz family continues to have a very close and strong association with the Yzerfontein community and has been directly involved in the establishment of the modern-day town of Yzerfontein.

Dennis Katz, the grandson of the late Abraham Katz and son of Lutie Katz succeeded his brother Jeff as the Managing Director of Yzerfontein Seaside Estates (Pty) Ltd in 1999. Dennis has been instrumental in upgrading the quality of homes that are built in Yzerfontein and continues to be the vision behind the enhancement and improvement of the town’s facilities.

Dennis Katz together with his son Graham Katz, Abrahams great grandson have established Yzerfontein Property Developers (Pty) Ltd to undertake new development projects such as the “Strandveld Villas” development. The continued involvement of the Katz family in the overall development of the town will ensure that the pristine qualities of the area are maintained for generations to come.
